lowed for an average of 6.8 years. "As expected, fatty fish intake was associated with higher levels of the fats (Omega - 3) in the plasma marker, while fried fish intake was not," says Siskovick. "The study supports the guidelines of the American Heart Association (AHA), which recommends intake of one or two servings of fatty fish per week in the general population," says Siskovick. Omega-3 fatty acids appear to have a possible anti-arrhythmic (abnormality of the rhythm of the heart beat) effect that can specifically reduce the cause of a fatal heart attack. The life-threatening arrhythmia can result in sudden cardiac death, according to researchers. Robert H. Eckel, M.D., national of spokesperson of the (AHA) and chairman of the (AHA) nutrition committee, says that this is the first study done in the elderly population and it should encourage good nutritional habits for people who are in life's later years.
